Spruce Avenue
Spruce Avenue, situated just north of downtown Edmonton, embodies a blend of heritage and modernity within the planned Blatchford redevelopment area. Its roots trace back to Edmonton’s early days, with its oldest residences adorning the historic Namayo Avenue (97 Street) and 1st Street (101 Street). Amidst its gridiron streets adorned with mature elm trees, a central school and park site serve as the heart of the residential community, surrounded by diverse non-residential land uses. This central location fosters convenience, with residents enjoying access to a myriad of services and easy connectivity to other parts of the city via major arterial roads. Spruce Avenue’s dynamic character is further enriched by a variety of institutions, including Kingsway Garden Mall, parts of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) campus, and Glenrose Hospital, alongside its residential fabric, schools, and places of worship. Its name, drawn from the former designation for 114th Avenue, echoes the area’s natural heritage, reminiscent of the prevalent spruce trees native to the region.
