Rossdale
Rossdale, one of Edmonton’s earliest neighborhoods, was originally called Ross Flats and holds a rich history deeply intertwined with First Nations heritage. Dating back to 1802, the area hosted two fur trading forts near the present-day Rossdale Generating Station. Donald Ross, who acquired vast land in 1876, erected Edmonton’s inaugural hotel at the base of McDougall Hill. Throughout its evolution, Ross Flats served as a pivotal supply point during the Klondike Gold Rush, housing various industries and cultural events, including sports at Diamond Park and exhibitions. Despite enduring a severe flood in 1915 and subsequent transformations, Rossdale retains its historical charm, with its revitalization guided by the city’s commitment to preserving river valley communities. Named after Donald Ross, whose pioneering spirit shaped early Edmonton, the neighborhood reflects a blend of heritage and modern aspirations, embodying resilience and community spirit.
