Griesbach, situated in north Edmonton, boasts a rich history rooted in its former role as a Canadian Forces Base during the 1950s. In the mid-1990s, the decision to consolidate army bases led to its transformation into a vibrant residential neighborhood under the management of the Canada Lands Company. This redevelopment aimed to honor the area’s military legacy while integrating existing greenery and offering a diverse mix of housing options.
Since the approval of its redevelopment plan in 2002, Griesbach has seen ongoing development, featuring a blend of single-detached, semi-detached, row housing, and apartment buildings. Notably, it embraced innovative concepts like garage suites and reverse housing, becoming a LEED ND pilot neighborhood. Central to its design is a spacious community park and a network of waterways and pathways, enhancing recreational opportunities for residents.
The neighborhood’s commercial village center, senior’s residence, and proposed mixed-use TOD areas add to its appeal and functionality. Reflecting its military past, Griesbach pays homage to Major General William Antrobus Griesbach, an esteemed figure in Edmonton’s history known for his significant contributions to both military service and civic leadership.
