Garneau

Tucked in the heart of Edmonton, Garneau boasts a rich history as one of the city’s oldest inner-city neighborhoods. Its roots trace back to the City of Strathcona, and it fully blossomed before joining Edmonton in the 1912 amalgamation. Over the years, Garneau has evolved, influenced by the adjacent University of Alberta and the vibrant Whyte Avenue commercial district. While remnants of its original single-detached homes endure, much of Garneau now thrives with modern row housing and apartment complexes, catering to a diverse residential community. Northwest Garneau hosts university student housing and fraternity residences, adding a dynamic flair to the neighborhood’s character. Named after Laurence Garneau, an esteemed early settler, Garneau continues to embody a blend of heritage and contemporary urban living.
