McKernan

Following amalgamation with Edmonton in 1912, McKernan’s development was deferred until the 1940s when McKernan Lake was drained, paving the way for progress. Bounded by 109 Street and 114 Street to the east and west, and by University Avenue and 72 Avenue to the north and south, McKernan features a blend of grid and curvilinear street patterns. Primarily low-density residential, the area saw substantial housing development between 1947 and 1953, followed by the addition of walk-up apartment buildings in the ensuing decades. Single-detached homes dominate the housing landscape, complemented by a modest commercial hub along 76th Avenue and an LRT stop at 76th Avenue and 114th Street. Named after esteemed businessman James McKernan, the neighborhood stands on land once owned by him, with its roots intertwined with Edmonton’s vibrant history.
