Killarney

Killarney’s roots in Edmonton trace back to 1913, with initial subdivision along Namayo Avenue (now 97th Street) as early as 1911. Subsequent development surged in the late 1950s, defining much of the neighborhood’s character. Offering diverse housing options, Killarney embraces a mix of single-detached, semi-detached homes, row housing, and low-rise apartments, fostering a varied residential landscape. Commercial establishments dot the perimeters along 82nd and 97th Streets, while 127th Avenue and the Yellowhead Highway border its southern edges. Anchored by four schools, several parks, and various religious institutions, Killarney cultivates a vibrant community spirit. Inspired by the Town of Killarney in Ireland, its name, derived from “Cill Airne” meaning “church of the sloes,” adds a touch of Celtic charm to Edmonton’s landscape, echoing the Irish-inspired nomenclature shared with neighboring locales like Kilkenny, Kildare, and Londonderry.
