Homesteader

Homesteader, nestled within the Hermitage plan area, holds a rich history dating back to the arrival of Canon William Newton in 1875, who established the original Hermitage. Initially an agricultural expanse, the neighborhood’s transformation began in the 1960s when land development took shape after annexation into Edmonton. Overcoming concerns regarding proximity to industrial sites, Homesteader emerged as the first developed neighborhood within the Hermitage plan, with residential construction starting in 1974.
Bordered by Hermitage Road, the main collector route, and featuring a central education and recreation hub, Homesteader fosters community engagement. Pedestrian-friendly pathways connect residents to neighboring Hermitage areas, while Kennedale Ravine offers serene access to the river valley park system. Local amenities, including businesses along 50th Street and the Hermitage Shopping Centre, cater to residents’ daily needs. Named in tribute to Edmonton’s pioneering settlers, Homesteader embodies a testament to their enduring legacy.
