Cromdale
Cromdale, one of Edmonton’s oldest inner-city neighborhoods, traces its roots back to the extension of a streetcar line along Jasper Avenue and Kinnaird Street in the early days. Initially, it was a primarily low-density residential area until the 1960s when redevelopment began near downtown, leading to the replacement of many houses with higher-density apartments. The neighborhood’s unique shape is attributed to the presence of the Kinnaird Ravine, which winds through its middle and offers residents excellent recreational opportunities. Cromdale’s proximity to downtown and efficient transportation links contributed to its evolution over time. Notably, the Coliseum, home to the Edmonton Eskimos football team, lies directly northwest of the neighborhood. The name “Cromdale,” meaning “crooked valley,” reflects its geographical features and draws inspiration from a place in Scotland, echoing its rich history and diverse character.
