Belmead

Belmead, designed in the 1970s, is a neighbourhood in Edmonton that was planned with an emphasis on efficient urban land use and higher densities compared to surrounding areas. This approach aimed to preserve agricultural land, conserve energy, and enhance service delivery efficiency. In Belmead, multi-unit structures are strategically placed near public transportation routes, schools, and shopping facilities, while single-detached houses are centred on either side of the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood layout shows two phases of development: an earlier eastern portion and a later western portion. Originally, the area west of 187th Street was reserved for a ring road, but as plans shifted further west, this land was integrated into Belmead and subsequently developed. The name “Belmead” comes from an abbreviation of the French “beautiful meadows,” fitting the pastoral theme of the Primrose subdivision where it is located.
