York
York, situated in northeast Edmonton, emerged during the 1960s amidst the city’s burgeoning population. Initially dominated by single-detached homes, the neighborhood adapted to demand, pioneering Edmonton’s first condominium complex with row housing units in 1967. Although single-detached units remained prevalent during the 1970s construction boom, multi-family structures gradually gained ground through ongoing development. Presently, York offers a diverse housing landscape, with slightly over half comprising single and semi-detached homes, alongside row houses and low-rise apartments. Its strategic placement along arterial roads, particularly 66th Street and 144th Avenue, enhances accessibility. Complemented by commercial amenities and educational facilities like York Elementary School, the neighborhood honors Annie A. York Secord, a revered local educator whose legacy enriches its identity.
