Belvedere

Belvedere, originally part of the village of North Edmonton, was annexed by Edmonton in 1910, marking its evolution from the outskirts to a key neighbourhood along Fort Road, a major route to Fort Saskatchewan. The area saw early commercial development with the opening of the Swift Company Packing Plant in 1908, but the bulk of residential growth occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. Recognizing its potential, the City of Edmonton placed an LRT station in Belvedere in the 1970s to spur redevelopment, though the closure of meat packing plants in the 1980s slowed progress. Today, Belvedere boasts diverse housing and concentrated commercial activity along Fort Road, including landmarks like the historic Transit Hotel and a prominent ten-storey brick smokestack from the former Canadian Packers Plant. Recently, the early 2000s brought a revitalization initiative, transforming Fort Road and developing the area south of the Belvedere LRT station into a vibrant, transit-oriented community combining residential and commercial spaces.
